Dale Place received the prestigious George Spelvin On-Stage Award at the Stoneham Theatre's annual Gala, the Backstage Boogie, on May 30. This award was in recognition of his outstanding performance during the year, and was voted on by theatre subscribers. As Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Dale held the audience spellbound, playing the central character in the theatre's most popular show. December 2002 marked Dale's second year performing Ebenezer Scrooge at Stoneham Theatre, and his sixth year at the American Stage Festival in New Hampshire. In recent years, Dale has performed on such regional stages as American Stage Festival, Northern Stage, Worcester Foothills Theatre, Lyric Stage Company, The Public Theatre, Wheelock Family Theatre, the New Art Theatre, the Nora Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, the Vineyard Playhouse, the Palace Theatre, Cleveland Play House and countless others including the Barnstormers Theatre; in New York he performed Off-Broadway at the Equity Library Theatre and the Oasis Theatre; he performed Film / Television such as SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and LOVING SOMETHING SWEET, a Cineblast Productions: and to many commercials and voiceovers to list.
Dale was raised in Cheboygan, Michigan. His educational years included Central Michigan University and the Academy of Dramatic Art at Oakland University, Mich. His professional debut was at the Cleveland Play House in the premiere of A YARD OF SUN directed by screen legend Jose Ferrer. While at Cleveland, he also appeared in American premiere of BINGO by Edward Bond. The 80's found Dale in New York appearing in off-Broadway shows and television. His home on the Barnstormers Summer Stock stage began in 1981 when Francis Cleveland auditioned him for EARNEST IN LOVE. Francis let him know he was part of the Barnstormers troop by writing him a simple note that said "That's just right." Dale's favorite roles over the years with the Barnstormers are: Norman in THE NORMAN CONQUESTS, Charlie in DA, C.C.Showers in THE DIVINERS, El Gallo in THE FANTASTICKS, and Harvey Green in TEN NIGHTS IN A BARROOM.
Ten years ago, Dale was married to Karen Perlow, a very talented Lighting Designer and a member of the Barnstormers Theatre family. Francis Cleveland married them in September of1993 at the Coulter Estate in Chocorua. They have been residents of Boston, Massachusetts since then.
Keeping the pace with her husband, Karen is also an award winner this year, receiving the Independent Reviewers of New England Award as Best Lighting Designer for DIRTY BLONDE at the Lyric Stage and BAT BOY at Speakeasy Stage.
Recent credits include working at the Speakeasy Stage Company, New Repertory Theatre, Lyric Stage Company, and the Nora Theatre Company. Perlow also teaches and designs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She's had jobs around Massachusetts and says she's "...always interested in working in a new space," trying to work in one new theater space each year. She chose Cape Rep this year - before starting her summer with the Barnstormers Theatre.
Hiring Perlow is part of the semiprofessional Cape Rep's push to import design talent to give its shows a different look and teach local staff. Perlow laughs as she tells the story of moving from her first love of acting to technical work because she wanted to take a class with a handsome teacher. The techniques involved with lighting "clicked" with her and she has been working for the past 10 years as a free-lance designer around Boston.
